More than 180 exhibitors from the capital region Berlin-Brandenburg exhibited at the Cebit 2010. Some of them met at the Berlin booth in hall 2. Though part of the media were discussing the necessity of this ICT exhibition, the general mood seemed good, it was well worth the trip. The Cebit being the world’s largest ICT exhibition, many times larger than the CES, offers opportunities for everybody. Although the organizers try to include the “web” through its webciety booths, the focus is still on business hard- and software and that seems a good position to me, considering the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and the IFA, the world’s largest consumer electronics fair in Berlin and numerous web 2.0 events everywhere.

Full house at the Socialmediaweek’s Congress in Berlin. I love that they have chosen the Berlin-typical location Festsaal Kreuzberg – crowded and people were queuing up outside. This panel was moderated by Markus Angermeier ( @kosmar ). Alexander Korth ( @alexkorth ) (Make Customers Friends), Jodok Batlogg ( @jodok ) (Studi VZ) und Falk Lüke ( @flueke ) (Verbraucherzentrale) were discussing “Privat in Social – Platform- vs. Userresponsibility”. Am impressd by what the organizers have managed to get together in short time – an interesting programm and a lot of events in this week. The twitter hashtag is #smwberlin.

Not truly digital in every sense, but good for Berlin and its English speaking visitors – NPR is in Berlin. I am a big fan of NPR, the US’ public, non-commercial radio, which you can basically hear in all regions of the USA. Of course you can listen to them over the internet, however, much nicer indeed is that you can do it with your normal FM (UKW) radio receiver in Berlin too. On 104.1 (MHz) FM you get NPR Berlin, the normal US programm with some German resp. Berlin content. It is the old frequency of Voice of America (VoA) which it got in early 2006.
NPR is a “non-commercial, privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization, NPR serves a growing audience of more than 25 million Americans each week in partnership with more than 800 independently operated, noncommercial public radio stations.” They offer great content without demanding an ever growing tax-like contribution from everybody (like in Germany), but rely mostly on contributions from their member stations and their listeners.
I joined a guided tour this summer in D.C. where I took a picture of one of their studios (other inside pics were not allowed;-).

Friday morning, getting up after the Zanox Summer Party and heading straight to the Berlin Open Coffee Club in the Carras Café at Potsdamer Platz. The crowd was a little smaller than usual, due to the aforementioned party I think, but the networking was good. The idea is simple, existing more or less world wide, you arrive, grab a coffee and at some point the initiator introduces him/herself and then everybody else does the same. The aim is to meet at least three new people, because you know who is there you know, who you can talk to.
A lot of 3D and virtual world stuff was going on this weekend in Berlin, I missed the Second Life meetup, but since it immediately was followed by the bizzin3D meetup (organized by Tobias Neisecke from Youin3D), I got my fair share of what is going on in the 3D world. Roughly 80 people gathered and spent their whit sunday afternoon and evening together. I did not see many journalists, a shame since the who is who of virtual worlds was there and could have been interviewed: representatives from companies from the UK, Slovenia, France, Netherlands, Poland etc. The big worlds like Second Life (Linden Lab), Twinity (Metaversum), Habbo and others where on panels.

Clare Rees (Linden Labs), Michael Schumann (Second Interest), Mirko Caspar (Metaversum), Dick Davies (Ambient Performance)

The first panel of the Bizzin3D meetup was titled “The Immersive Internet – Virtual Worlds and the Transformation of Business”. I enjoyed the honesty of the panel – the transformation has clearly just begun and it will take many years till there is a clear change due to virtual worlds (VWs). The change we see is due to new concepts in our digital age, a shrunken world (in distances), a bigger world (in possible experiences). However, having companies like Linden Lab and Metaversum in Berlin existing solely on Virtual Worlds and their service providers like Second Interest and Youin3D is already a change to the old world. The VWs user growth is now in children and youths, so a new generation is growing and using VWs, the real Digital Natives are born not longer than 3-5 years ago. I doubt that many users watched the events in Second Life and twinity, though I think it is absolutely necessary to do the streaming of course.
It’s all about monetisation in the end, so to the question why companies should move to a VW, Clare Rees basically pointed to “collaboration”, Michael Schumann stressed future advantages: “these are strategic moves today for a strategic advantage tomorrow” and Mirko Caspar showcased his Asian early adopter Singapur, who has great plans for their digital future. ..and I guess all three are legitimate answers and all true at the same time. The general agreement was that, if you are able to bring your own audience, you can start now.
But again, in my opinion it will take years till we are at a stage, where use of VW is widespread in the corporate world. I, however, believe VWs will be a major part of the future natural habitat of Digital Natives, since interaction there is much more natural than over mail etc. The question I wanted to ask Second Life, when they will allow the use of real names (since they have already real cities (newBerlin e.g.) could not be answered (”we are thinking about it”), I give them another 6 months max., till they do that, the need is clearly there.
If you are interested in a much more detailed view on this event, Mr.Topf a.k.a Tao Takashi was there and has published a review in his blog.

Women are of course the target group of the GirlGeeKDinner, so men to come along need to find a female companion, thankfully the website allows you to ask to be “adopted”. ..and the concept works, more than half ot the people were were women. The atmosphere was relaxed, one is encouraged to present ideas and projects. A student presented her idea to write about the History of the Push Button, something I really liked. Or was it the Button Push? I do not know, I just hope she finds partners to write with, and do it interactively, in some kind of portal, web site, as she suggested.
Echtzeit (Realtime) was invitation only for everybody, no matter which gender. Short presentations were followed by networking between a lot of entrepreneurs, founders and investors. This concept works as well in my opinion, the relatively small event (under 200 people) allows you to find the people you want to talk to or get intros to new contacts. The businesslike atmosphere suits the event and is nevertheless relaxed enough, no wonder, it’s all about the web.
A much bigger crowd gathered when zanox called for their summer party – I can only repeat estimats that roughly a thousand people met at Spindler&Klatt on the other side (seen rom zanox’ offices) of the river Spree. It was a great party, exhausted as I was from the BerlinWebWeek (it was the 5th day of conferences, barcamps, networking and parties) I left after midnight, the twitterstream tells me that the last people left when the sun was almost up… I would not have liked to miss anything of this and was happy that I could be part of it. A big thank you to all the organizers!

This week, the BerlinWebWeek 2009, was hard so far – lots of events, meetings and parties to go to. Having initiated this BerlinWebWeek I tried to be at all the events and I almost succeeded. Most of my time I spent at the webinale conference, the strategy and business oriented conference track of the Software & Support Verlag presented by create or die in the Berliner Conference Center bcc, accompanied by the two technical conferences RailsWayCon and International php Conference. The webinale also hosted the Frogster Virtual Worlds Camp, which concentrated on virtual worlds and virtual goods.

webinale conference at bcc, Berlin

The bcc, designed by the Bauhaus Student and probably most well known East German architect Hermann Henselmann, lends itself very well to conferences like this. It is small enough to not feel lost inside and has an open atmosphere. That it is located in the very center of Berlin is another point for it. It suited the feeling of the webinale, many tracks to choose from and lots of networking opportunities. I was there every day for at least half a day, from the first startupday on monday to the following full conference days. I missed the webinale crawl, 3 parallel guided office tours through Berlin-based web companies but I look forward to join next year. Looking for food for thought I joined the keynotes of Ossi Urchs and the one from Karlheinz (call me Charly) Toni, the Austrian CEO of the British startup Piins. Piins is his 2nd project after Miomi.

Karlheinz Toni, CEO of Piins

Toni’s key note topic was “The flaw of the internet and modern communication“. It started out well with some maths about exponential functions and their relation to the internet and its growths resp. question, whether its growths (data flow) could be accomodated by the technical infrastructure/standards. However, at some place it turned into how contents can be combined and displayed on the same page/window. ..which is where Piins comes into play. I enjoyed the start of his speech, he was very entertaining and invited everybody to visit him and his team on his houseboat Nr. 10 in London.
An invitation to play was the keynote of Kevin Slavin from areacode. Areacode produces cross-media games and entertainment, his examples were entertaining and thought provoking. A member of areaplay is also involved in botanicalls, a device enabling plants to twitter and text messaging. His scarce use of powerpoint was also enjoyable.

Kevin Slavin of areacode

<img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-213" title="politcampberlin-014" src="http://www.koelpin.de/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/politcampberlin-014.jpg" alt="Politcamp Berlin 09 Baranek und Dahlmann" " width="485" height="336" />

The third year in a row Berlin has had its booth at the web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. I think I remember Berlin being the only German booth as well as being the only economic development agency there in the past. Counting all companies there now I come to approx. 10 from Germany and their majority from the Berlin region. With this I think the German constituency seems to be the largest but one cannot be sure, since the origin of exhibitors cannot be searched. I do not know about the percentage of Germany attendees, I however met several and suppose they constitute the largest group from continental Europe. The Berlin booth was organized by Berlin Partner, Brandenburg was represented by the Zukunftsagentur (both economic development agencies), Solidground (BizDev) and Ralf Otto (TaxConsult) offered their services. The highlight turned out to be Metaversum or rather its project twinity, a real life 3D model of Berlin. It attracted many visitors which were curious about the project and gave a us a good starting point for discussions. I am not sure how the founders would like to see it described, I’d call it a mixture between Second Life and Facebook, taking the best things out of each (i.e. the 3D animated world only with “real” cities and the social network with real names and “real” avatars). They will roll out Singapore and London next, I suppose the US will be tackled then. However, Zanox, who last time shared our booth had set up their own now and Germany Trade and Invest (the former Invest in Germany) had their own large booth, sharing it with the Fraunhofer Institute and Sachsen-Anhalt. Coremedia from Hamburg had a booth as well. Having been there already a couple of years one could see the recession, I guess the exhibition area was rented out by 30% less and there were 2.000 visitors less. However, the glass was half full in my opinion: most of the exhibitors seemed to have returned and most of the attendees as well (10.000 last year). I share Jennifer Pahlka’s optimism – the vibe was good despite the economic downturn. We were able to show steadiness in our approach with the booth to market Berlin as the ideal investment location for a European expansion of US entrepreneurs. Of course we tried to bring our message across about the digital side of Berlin – we had the chance to talk to Sean Percival (twitter), founder of the lalawag magazin about Berlin and our intentions. The lalawag covers tech culture, events, gossip and news from Los Angeles.
Another interesting encounter happened with Stuart Schulzke, director from FORA.tv who gather the “web’s largest collection of unmediated video drawn from live events, lectures, and debates going on all the time at the world’s top universities, think tanks and conferences”. They know now about my choice between the iphone and Blackberry and, of course, about Berlin
.

Yesterday the Webmonday Silicon Valley took place, i.e. the Webmontag web 2.0 Expo edition. I do not exactly know, how many people were there, I suppose around 40 all in all. It took place in Citizen Space, a co-working place in San Francisco’s city centre I have already used on previous trips, both as a place to get some work done and as the place where the previous webmondays were held, which I (Berlin Partner co)sponsored. There were organized by Tim Bonnemann, the inventor of the Webmontag concept.
I very much enjoy Webmondays, be it in Berlin or here in SanFran, you get to network easily and the presentations are always short and to the point, letting you make the maximum out of your time. Yesterday Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI) and Berlin Partner presented their services for investors expanding to Germany. Metaversum showed their 3D World Twinity and the Fraunhofer HHI showcased their video retrieval technologies, they are all going to be at the expo too. I found doodle, a Swiss company very interesting. They allow you to solve the problem of coordinating meeting or conf call times with people using different calenders. They have an outlook integration and opend their API recently (it goes on for 2 more weeks, you can win a trip to Switzerland) and I suppose to see even more of them in the future.
A project I will check out for the blogs I am contributing to is apture. They seem to have found an amazing way to improve the usability (surfing experience) of websites, integrating multimedia to your site in a very easy to use way. They are interesting for bloggers and publishers alike. Check out the lower part of their site to experience it. It’s great! There was camera running, I hope to be able to show some video footage soon.

Berlin will be present for the 3rd time in April 2009 at the web 2.o Expo in the Silicon Valley. Berlin Partner organized a booth for the capital region, which they will use together with the economic development agency of Brandenburg ZAB to market to international companies for an expansion to Berlin and Brandenburg i.e. Germany and Europe. Additionally Solidground and Ralf Otto Steuerberatung offer their services for a market entry in Europe to companies willing to expand.
Solidground ist specialised in consulting and business development, particularly for German-American projects and Ralf Otto Tax Consultants is specialised in helping international clients get advice and support in all matters of tax and finance.
At the booth Berlin will be presented in the virtual realm as well. Metaversum will show their project twinity, a 3-dimensional virtual Berlin, which you can explore with your avatar. As opposed to Second Life Metaversum counts on connecting the real world with the virtual one as close as possible, i.e. using real names and show Berlin as it is. The Berlin company works on models of Singapur and London as well.
During that week many events will take place in and around the Moscone Center – I would like to mention one particularly: the Silicon Valley Webmontag – Webmonday (on a tuesday ;-). I will report from there.

The BerlinWebWeek SpringEdition will take place at the end of May 2009, the preparations are going on fine and I am very optimistic, that the days of the BerlinWebWeek will be packed with events again. They will make travelling to the capital worthwhile. I have tried to compile a digital review. As somebody who is one of the initiators of BerlinWebWeek I am surely not neutral, the initiative is very important to me. However, I found almost only positive feedack in the internet. The choice between events was huge, everybody could find a niche topic for him or her… and if you have suggestions please give feedback. Kai has aggregated, how BerlinWebWeek became a portal and is now a fixture if you want to know hat is going on in Berlin and how we will make it again a series of events in May.
BerlinBlase has compiled a map of events and locations, Nicole Simon wrote in Crueltobekind. Zanox has filmed a video about some of the events:

There were so many, that is was impossible to be at all of them, as Nico Lumma wrote. The MIKI, which Kai produced shows that in colourful pictures. Fastenyourseatbelts has used the Week to ask me, how events like that interact with citymarketing, investments and tourism. Radio Fritz broadcasted a short interview with me in the broadcast Trackback. OnPodcast.de is an extensive interview with Nico Lumma about some of the events.
There are so many people and portals who wrote about the BerlinWebWeek, I only want to mention a few: Stylewalker, Dittes, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Dagger, Berlin Kollektiv, Twemes – Tweets with BerlinWebWeek, Fotos on Flickr, Berliner Zeitung and many many more.

The next BerlinWebWeek will take place end of May 2009. The best time for it was discussed for a long time since there are two big events in the 2nd quarter of the year which would have been suitable, the re:publica and the webinale. Organisational reasons led to the decision to have the BerlinWebWeek around the webinale at the end of May. The re:publica at the beginning of April will even without the BerlinWebWeek be (again) extremly well attended and interesting, we will keep you informed.
Today there are already a couple of events later at the the end of May in the BerlinWebWeek: the webinale, the ux camp, the TYPO Berlin, the Mobile Monday, so we will have a Web Week again about 10 days long. 10 day which will make it worth coming from other regions of Germany and further away to the German capital. If you plan an event, please put it here. Should you think about organizing one, please contact Berlin Partner.

To get an overview about who is who and who is doing what in the German (speaking) Startup scene, a regular visit of Deutsche Startups is recommended. The portal, whose editorial office is located in Berlin, publishes a daily newsletter, offers a huge list of existing web startups, a long list of potential investors and an equally interesting list with companies already in the “dead pool“.

For entrepreneurs and employees equally interesting is the Jobboard with jobs for interns. The shareholders of the portal are chief editor Alexander Hüsing, Stefan Vosskötter (managing director of DS Media and founder of „Webnews“) as well as the European Founders Fund (a.k.a. the Samwer brothers) and Holtzbrinck Ventures.
Since the end of 2008 on one can experience Deutsche Startups also offline, Alexander Hüsing has established a series of events called Echtzeit, which has been organized with the help of sponsors already twice in Berlin. I was on the 3rd of February at Echtzeit II Berlin in the premises of Zanox with over 170 other guests. The topic of the day was “External Financing vs. Bootstrapping”, very suitable for the economic situation of the first quarter of 2009. Since the event is an invitation only event the percentage of entrepreneurs and investors was very high among the guests. I can only recommend to use Deutsche Startups.de online (if you know a little German) and offline to get introduced to what is happening in Germany and German speaking regions in the web 2.0 area.

For people, who would like to get to know the Berlin Web and Free Software crowd and also meet nice people and have a cold beer, I recommend the webmonday, Webmontag, at new.thinking. The founders of new.thinking and hosts of the events are Andreas Gebhard und Markus Beckedahl. The new.thinking store is located in the very center of Berlin, Berlin Mitte, in walking distance from Oranienburger Strasse and Hackescher Markt. The beverage prices are very reasonable (the event itself for free).

Of course there are presentations, for which you can put your name down in a Wiki and then you have the chance to present your ideas, your questions or success stories to an interested audience.

I met an interesting mixture of innovative companies as barcoo, fresh ideas – yes, I could imagine paying 3 EUR/month for a very good blog about Berlin – and Networking offers in and with Asia by a nice Berliner (Mario Behling).

One of the most forward thinking events I have ever visited was the web 2.0 summit 2008 organized by O’Reilly Media. They are usually organized at the end of each year in November in San Francisco. It is an invitation only event (you can ask for one here) which has a steep price but in my opinion is worth every cent. The organizers limit the number of multipliers and service companies and so the majority of the participants is from media, web, soft- and hardware companies. It was a more or less international event, the majority of people came from the US, understandably to a large extent from the Silicon Valley. However, I met Australians, many Europeans including half a dozen fellow countrymen and -women from Germany, and Asians.
A tip for those who don’t have thousands of $$$ left to spend for a ticket: like at any good conference there are always opportunities to network outside of the actual meeting rooms, many people spent the main hours of each day in the Lobby of the “Palace Hotel” and talked to the participants free of charge.
Going to the summit that week is worthwile as other organizations organize smaller events at that time as well, making use of the web summit week and thus making it easier to decide to travel because there is not only the 3 to 4 day summit but other events to learn and network. I used the time to meet companies at meetings I had scheduled in order to help them with their decision to expand to Europe/Germany/Berlin. I was pleasently surprised that even in the economic situation at the beginning of November 2008 I had discussions with companies looking at Europe and thus having a definite interest in Berlin, so that I could return home and follow up on the leads.
I was lucky enough to have been at the summt twice, 2007 and 2008. I plan on returning whenever possible. At both summits there was a line-up of excellent speakers and at both summits I was able to experience first hand decisions/information (for example: Yahoo CEO Yang), which largely influenced the web 2.0 and social media sphere.
